a new year

The Fancy Year of 2017

Its a New Year, 2017. Moving forward into the next phase of my cancer journey. The first phase was the surgery, the second was the recuperation, the third was the chemo and now I am in my forth phase. Many look at the new year as an opportunity, as a new beginning, as a time to start again. I see it as a number.

It is a number because change is a personal experience, it happens on a moment, every moment.  We are the masters of our destiny, we decide who we are and what we want to become.  This decision is made by you every second of the day, it is not a moment reserved for the beginning of another year.

When you step on the road of wilfull change you have begun your transformation into your own advocate.  The only way we can have an impact on our life is if we are our own advocate.  If you do not stand up for yourself, no one else will.  Be good to yourself and be your own friend.

Nioxin vs Monat vs Rogaine

Nioxon vs Monat vs Rogaine

While perusing the land of Facebook I was drawn to an image (shown below) illustrating the advantages of one product over two others. With my interest piqued I spent the better part of an evening researching it’s claims. I believe we all fall victim to the whirlwind of information flashed before our eyes. There is so much knowledge at our fingers tips it can be challenging to decipher fact from fiction.

Errors and Clarifications

The first error the author made was when they classified Nioxin, a company as a product. I am assuming the author intended to compare Nioxin’s Hair Regrowth Treatment for Men and Rogaine to the Monat product: Intense Repair Treatment.

The second error was when it compared the three products unfairly. No attempt was made to compare each item in a like manner, essentially the author was comparing apples to oranges.

The next error was that the active and inactive ingredients were inaccurately listed. If you consult the following data you will see that Acetamide MEA, Cocamide MEA, PEG-150 distearate, Tocopherol, Cocamidopropyl betaine, Diazolidinyl, Sodium Laureth sulfate, Tetrasodium EDTA, Methylparaben PEG-150 distearate and Propylparaben are not on the ingredient list for Nioxin’s Hair Regrowth Treatment.
The active ingredient of Nioxin’s Hair Regrowth Treatment for Men is 5% Minoxidil. The inactive ingredients are Alcohol, Propylene Glycol and Purified Water. [3]

The active ingredient of Rogaine is Minoxidil 5%. The inactive ingredients of Rogaine are butane, butylated hydroxytoluene, cetyl alcohol, citric acid, glycerin, isobutane, lactic acid, polysorbate 60, propane, purified water, SD alcohol 40-B, stearyl alcohol.

The product I assume the author wishes to compare from Monat is their Intense Repair Treatment, which claims to be a patented biometric peptide formula, that has “higher proven results than other leading hair loss brands” and its “clinical results prove significant results in just 90 days” [1]

The Intense Repair Treatment does not use the terms active and inactive ingredients, instead the terms ‘key ingredient’ and ‘ingredients’ are used. The key ingredient is Capixyl [1]. However on the main Monat website this ingredient is not mentioned. On the main Monat website it states that the product’s ingredients are water, butylene glycol, acetyl tetrapeptide-3, Trifolium Pratense Flower Extract, hydrolyzed wheat protein, dextran, xanthan gum, pvp, cocamidopropyl-pg-dimonium, chloride, benzyl alcohol, dehydroacetic acid, fragrance.

According to another source the ingredient list of Capixyl is: Butylene Glycol, water, Dextran, Acetyl Tetrapeptide-3, Trifolium Pratense Flower Extract which matches up with most of the ingredients within the Intense Repair Treatment. [2]

How are the terms key, active and inactive ingredients defined?
According to the World Health Organization the term active ingredient is defined as:

“active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) Any substance or combination of substances used in a finished pharmaceutical product (FPP), intended to furnish pharmacological activity or to otherwise have direct effect in the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment or prevention of disease, or to have direct effect in restoring, correcting or modifying physiological functions in human beings.”

An inactive ingredient or vehicle is an inactive substance mixed with an active ingredient to give bulk to a medicine. [4]

I have found no pharmaceutical definitions for key ingredients.

What do these three products do?

Nioxin Hair Regrowth Treatment for men and Rogaine have identical active ingredients.
Active Ingredient: Minoxidil 5%.

“Minoxidil applied to the scalp is used to stimulate hair growth in adult men and women with a certain type of baldness. The exact way that this medicine works is not known. If hair growth is going to occur with the use of minoxidil, it usually occurs after the medicine has been used for several months and lasts only as long as the medicine continues to be used. Hair loss will begin again within a few months after minoxidil treatment is stopped. In the U.S., this medicine is available without a prescription.” [5]

Monat Intense Repair Treatment
Key Ingredient: Capixyl (not listed as an active ingredient, see above)

There is no information on Pubmed about Capixyl. [6]

There appears to be no evidence-based data to suggest Capixyl or the Monat Intense Repair Treatment has any affect on the regrowth of hair.

According to my research Minoxidil is the only drug proven to regrow hair. Monat’s claim that Capixyl (or Monat’s Intense Repair Treatment) can regrow hair is anecdotal at best.

People in your Life – Read some delightful poetry!

People in your Life

How wonderful are the people in your life?

Are they marvelous?

Do they fill your inside zones with joy?

Are they the delicious cream of your soft scrumptious eclair?

Do they own your heart and soul?

Did you give this as a gift?

or were your bones broken as they peeled your fingers back?

to snatch and grab your heart from  your battered and beaten hand.

Do they bounce your soul like an old rubber ball?

Like they don’t care about it at all?

letting it fly this way and that, bouncing down the bleak empty hall.

or do they nestle it against their chest?

Loving it for All

You want me to do something – Poem

Threes a bean and his girlfriend Snur

Threes a bean and his girlfriend Snur

Three’s a bean

and silly to be

He likes cats and furs

and especially his girl friend Snur

She likes big fancy things

and things that sing

She likes love and likes and really fast bikes

and especially her big boy friend Three.

Together they were a pair

Living like two beans in a snare.

They danced and pranced

and moved with glee.

Sometimes they would leave their trap

to follow a map

traveling to places

from here to there

They would see things

Having fun and such

Holding hand in hand

protecting each other from the hot covered sand.

One day

which is now

They left for a trip

Together just the two

Walking from here to there

and there to there

they found spiky, pokey burly bur cover land

It was there, there was no way round

only option was to go back from where they were found

With smiles on their face

and anticipation on their brow

they tip toed here and there

avoiding this and that

as they walked this sticky stucky place with their shoe-less feet

Three the bean began to find things with his feet.

He said

Snur stopped and turned

her face was filled with concern

She knelt close to take a look.

surely whirly there it was, that burly bur was sticking stuckly right from that bulgingly big toe!

She said:

This thing

This thing I see

It sticks out

for everyone to see!

It so big, bigger than big

Its enormous! How were you able to step on something so huge?

The eyes of Three widened

His eyes filled with fear, how bad could this be?

With a weakened soft voice he said:

That thing

That’s what you see?

It sticks out?

Its so big? How can this be?

How will I ever go free?

She pondered and thought

then one idea came

it was with her fingers

that she would set him free

with two fingers pinching

she sure did squeeze

Snur pulled that big ol’ bur

and threw it into the leaves

after a single moment

they both could see

he, Mr Three the bean was finally free!

Looking ahead

A long trip they saw

Burs and sticks and stones dotted as far as their eye could spy

Snur looked at Three’s clumsy feet

Though they were big, though she loved their strength

knew he was no acrobat

surely he would step on every burly bur as he walked through the burs and sticks and stones

With a welcoming smile Snur said:

Come here my big fine man

Come take my hand

Come climb my back

Come be my sac pack

Let me

your girlfriend Snur

carry you pass all these burs.

In our Life – Poem

An Update

An Update

An update you say? Yes an update indeed! I hope the universe has been treating you well. Perhaps you’ve gone on an adventure or found a favorite color. My preferred flavor of color is purple or blue, especially in the cold, cylindrical variety.

As of late I’ve been working on all sorts of projects. Right now, I am focusing a lot of my effort into my podcast. Though in the past I made attempts at creating audio material, this time I’ve found my footing. In addition to the podcast I am writing the Advocacy for Hope book. This guidebook will be partially autobiographical and informative. Before the release of this book I will release a series on my podcast relating to its content. The final mentionable is a writing club for people with cancer. The goal is to explore Hope through community and friendship. I look forward to sharing more of the details with you in the coming weeks.

I hope that you have a wonderful week, health and peace to you and yours!

Night Time Slumber

Night Time Slumber

Night Time Slumber

Night Time Slumber

It is late and some time ago I laid down for a deep rest, searching for a delightful night time slumber. Perhaps the universe wants me to be awake, maybe it has a desire for me to explore my feels and release them into the ether. As I sit here my body eases away the pains, thoughts and concerns. Occasionally an acidic burn slides up my throat or my tummy whimpers from the prickly pains in my belly. There are moments when I notice the challenge of swallowing, the fleeting ghosting ghosts or the burning smell that flutters up my nose.

Peace finds me as I explore these feels and the feelings from them. Though my body zones may be on the waters of discomfort I have brought a surf board to slide and ride across them. I imagine the warm air wrap around me as I navigate the board atop powerful waves. It is invigorating, rejuvenating and incredible.

I love life and the cup that comes with it. It is never half full or half empty, it is complete and wrapped with infinite awe.

Through our cup and the liquid life therein we have our hopes and dreams, our adventures and plans. Many leave this cup on the counter, refusing to take even one sip. Others take a drink here and there. I choose to devour the contents, gulping it down and savoring every drop.

Drinking life like this can be painful, it means you must accept all of the goods with the bads. You have to embrace the smiles with the frowns. Be ready to explore the most beautiful dreams in our night time slumber, sleeping away in our soft beds. And… be willing give up many nights to the morning.

Tree of Life

Healthy Relationships – Body of Life

Healthy Relationships

So much has changed since I began this journey. Many of the thoughts I wrote are no longer what I believe now. A good number were force fed to me by Ino. Spoonful’s of his hurt jammed down my throat into my heart. I have a peace-love relationship with my time with him. My heart has found peace, I no longer suffer with animosity or anger toward Ino. I love him as I would any person. The hurt he fed me has been spat out and the sour taste washed away. This peace has opened the pantry door for me savor the experience of healthy relationships.

From Ino and the Wolf in Sheep’s clothing I’ve discovered a quality I look for in others. True Empathy, the kind where hurt spoken is investigated before being dismissed. I want a friend in my corner who will listen to me, before they cast out my feels on this or that. The same is what I want to give, and that is exactly what will be given.

I’ve always believed that your lover should be your friend, your best friend. They should be your partner in crime, your battle buddy, your advocate. In my last relationship, I didn’t have this. It was a clear parameter set by them, a line I wasn’t allowed to cross. Healthy Shawn White would have ended the relationship then and there. Me-of-the-Past and Me-Now are a lot stronger than Chemo-Me, or Post-Chemo-Me. I was in too deep, too much in love during a troubling time to let go. It was the right thing for me, it was the affection and attention I needed. There is nothing I regret about that relationship. It was, as it was, and everything it was meant to be. I’m at peace with it and have moved on.

Every Relationship is Different

I believe that every relationship is different, each with its own social contract. Though different, all are similar in that they’re defined by the personal boundaries of at least two people. I dig love, life, adventures and dreams, but without personal boundaries none are possible.
